Exercise and Academic Performance: How Are They Related?

Getting good grades seems to be the overarching goal of most of childhood and adolescence. Whether or not this is always the healthiest thing, it’s true that academic performance does lead to more opportunities for success in early adulthood. 

It turns out there might be more to learning than sitting inside and studying, though. We’re going to explore the relationship between exercise and academic performance in this article, giving you a new take on why you should be getting active.

The Relationship Between Exercise and Academic Performance

It turns out that physical activity is actually one of the most important factors in a person’s baseline ability to solve problems effectively. Sure, you won’t know the answers to the test if you don’t study the material. But how well do you understand and register that material is connected to your exercise? 

It’s not just baseline fitness, either. A person can be extremely fit without ever stepping foot outdoors. That has to do with their diet (also important for learning) and their metabolism. but the benefits of exercise come from the act of exercising. 

Cardio and strength training increases the strength of neurons in the areas of memory, learning, complex thought, and more. Further, this exercise sends more oxygen to your brain, helping it function more effectively. 

Exercise also leads to an increase in neurotransmitters. These factors work together to make stronger connections between regions of the brain, extend the amount of focus that an individual has when studying, and stave off decay and forgetfulness. 

Not to mention, appropriate amounts of exercise actively increase a person’s energy and focus. You might not feel that effect if you exercise once every few months, but regular exercise does lead to heightened attention and focus. 

Options for Exercise

If exercise were always easy, everyone would be doing it as much as possible. It’s a tough thing to get started with. Not only is motivation required, but you have to find a way to fit it into a tight schedule. 

This is even tougher when you’re trying to find healthy outlets for your child. After-school sports are often a good option, but your child might not be interested in those activities. Interesting alternatives like a Brazilian jiu-jitsu academy or another extracurricular might be better options. 

You don’t have to take things to that level, either. If you’re not finding a way to implement a structured exercise option, try going for walks regularly. Maybe you and your child start walking to and from school. 

You could also purchase some workout equipment for the home, or start exploring different sports that you can play as a family. The point is to get your heart beating and possibly break a sweat. 

It’s not crucial to do any backbreaking lifting or cardio. What matters is that you’re getting active enough to start seeing some of the benefits described above.
